Local student raises money for kids with cancer
CHASEBURG, Wis. (WKBT) — Students in the Social Problems class at Westby High School have been given a 20-Time project, which is where a student dedicates 20 percent of their time in class to identifying a social problem and trying to do something about it.
Student Hayley Cade is using her school project to brighten up the holidays for others.
The population in Chaseburg isn’t much more than 300, but on Saturday morning you could find many of those residents enjoying breakfast together.
“We’re all just one big family,” Cade said.
Saturday, Cade hosted a pancake breakfast as part of her class project. She hoped to raise enough money to cross off everything on the Christmas wish list created by the kids in the oncology department at Gundersen hospital in La Crosse.
“There’s a lot of things that they want that they can’t necessarily get on their own. I’m just hoping I would make enough for that,” Cade said.
“I am very proud of Hayley. This is a huge undertaking that she has gone on and I hope it’s extremely successful,” Mark Luebke, Hayley’s social problems teacher, said.
Cade will be going to college to be a nurse next year, but that isn’t the only reason she chose to serve breakfast and raise money for kids with cancer.
Last year she lost her grandpa to cancer.
“He was a part of the Shriners and he helped out a lot with the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis,” Cade said.
She said her grandpa would drive his neighbors to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Minneapolis nearly every weekend and he was always visiting with the kids that were in the hospital.
Now, his passion for helping others has been passed on to her and her Chaseburg family.
“They’re all a part of my family, kind of, because as a community we all come together when things happen,” Cade said.
Cade said she is extremely thankful for all the donations she received to help put on the breakfast. She hopes to visit with some of the kids at Gundersen and then buy the gifts within the next couple weeks. She plans to deliver them just before Christmas.
