Local students are learning how to stay safe this summer with ‘Slide into Safety’

Almost half of all injuries among children happen between May and August

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Almost half of all injuries among children happen between May and August when they are more likely to be outside and unsupervised.

As kids spent more time at home during 20-20, there was a sharp decline in school-related injuries, including sports but an increase in injuries related to skateboards, scooters, and hoverboards as kids spent more time at home.

The ‘Slide into Safety’ program led by Gundersen Health System hopes to teach kids about safety just in time for summer.

“Even playground safety, thinking about how to be a safe swimmer. And also just thinking about some of those small things we might forget, like how to approach an animal that we might not be familiar with or ask for the owners permission before petting a dog is always a good idea too,” according to Megan Anderson the Gundersen Trauma and Injury Prevention Coordinator.

A total of 19 area schools and more than 900 students are participating in this year’s program virtually throughout May.
It will include lots of topics including fire safety and the importance of wearing a helmet.
