Make Music La Crosse to feature variety of free musical events on summer solstice
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Make Music La Crosse will return for its second year with an eclectic mix of free musical events throughout the city on June 21.
Make Music La Crosse is part of Make Music Day, an annual global music celebration that takes place on the summer solstice and brings people of all ages and skill levels together to create music.
La Crosse will be among more than 100 U.S. cities hosting thousands of performances as part of the world’s largest annual music event. Make Music Day, which began in France in 1982 as the “Fête de la Musique,” has spread to more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.
Make Music concerts are different from typical musical festivals, as anyone who wants can perform. From classical to folk, hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock, live music of all kinds resounds on streets, sidewalks, porches, plazas, parks, gardens, store fronts and other public spaces on the longest day of the year.
Make Music La Crosse featured more than 20 concerts last year, and more are expected this year. Highlights will include free music at Bluffside Park, with Peter Kish and friends and music in front of the mural at the Pump House Regional Arts Center, with Jamie Groth performing.
Any musician — amateur or professional, young or old, of any genre — can register at the event’s website to participate. Registration closes on June 20. Businesses, buildings, schools, churches and other institutions can visit the website to offer their outdoor spaces as concert locations.
A full schedule of events will be posted at the website as the summer solstice approaches.
The NAMM Foundation, supported by the National Association of Music Merchants, sponsors Make Music Day, which the nonprofit Make Music Alliance coordinates.
