Man arrested in connection with Iowa woman’s death

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A man Des Moines police want to interview about the slaying of a pregnant 18-year-old woman has been arrested at the Mexican border.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Chris Scott says Raymond Benitez was detained at a border crossing near Brownsville, Texas, Friday night because of a material witness warrant.

Benitez will be returned to Des Moines, so he can answer questions about Judy VanLo, whose body was found on June 17 by family members.

A friend of VanLo’s, Fernando Lara, told the Des Moines Register Benitez was VanLo’s boyfriend and the father of her unborn child.

The cause of VanLo’s death has not been released.
