Man rescued from ice on Mississippi River near Stoddard
Ice fisherman was attempting to retrieve ice shanty
An ice fisherman had to be rescued Sunday afternoon from the Mississippi River, north of Stoddard.
The Vernon Co. Sheriff’s Department says a motorist saw a person in the water around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Anthony Culbert, 58, of Wisconsin Rapids was ice fishing when he fell into the water attempting to retrieve an ice fishing shanty that had blown away.
Two firefighters with the Stoddard-Bergen Fire Dept. went out onto the ice to attempt to rescue Culbert. He had already managed to get out of the water by the time they reached him and was back on the ice.
The firefighters walked out to Culbert and brought him back to shore on their sled.
He was treated at the scene by Tri-State Ambulance.
