Marlins trade Christian Yelich to Brewers
The Miami Marlins traded center fielder Christian Yelich to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night for four prospects.
In return for Yelich, Miami received outfielder Lewis Brinson, rated as the Brewers’ top prospect, along with infielder Isan Diaz, outfielder Monte Harrison and right-handed pitcher Jordan Yamamoto.
Yelich, 26, had asked out of Miami after the newly sold team began reducing payroll in favor of stockpiling prospects under new CEO Derek Jeter. Since the team’s Oct. 2 sale, it has traded away reigning MLB home run champion and NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, stolen base champ Dee Gordon and All-Star left fielder Marcell Ozuna.
Yelich won a Gold Glove his first full season in the majors in 2014 and a Silver Slugger in 2016. He hit for a .282 average last season to go along with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs.
A career .290 hitter, he will make $7 million this season in the third year of a $49.57 million, seven-year deal.
