Mauston teacher arrested, resigns amid police investigation

MAUSTON, Wis. (WISC) — A teacher in the Mauston school district was arrested Thursday and has resigned from the district amid a police investigation, officials tell News 3.

Mauston School District superintendent Christine Weymouth released a statement Saturday evening that said the school board will consider the resignation of social studies teacher Stewart Thompson at a special board meeting Monday.

“An active law enforcement investigation is occurring and the school district is fully cooperating with that investigation,” the statement said. “The school district will provide more information as it is made available by law enforcement and permitted by the public records law.”

Thompson’s name had been removed from the district’s online staff directory Friday night.

Juneau County Jail officials tell News 3 Thompson was in court Friday and has since been released on a $50,000 signature bond.

Officials said no formal charges have been filed as of Friday.

News 3 has reached out to the Mauston police department and a number listed for the Juneau County district attorney, but requests for comment have gone unanswered as of Saturday afternoon.
