Mayo Clinic announces plan for new hospital building in La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Mayo Clinic Health System announced it will replace its current building in La Crosse with a new hospital.
The new building, which will have six floors and accommodate 70 hospital beds, will be built next to the Cancer and Surgery building along West Avenue, on space now used used for parking.
Gone are the days of big hospital buildings.
“The future of healthcare is moving away from big hospitals with large in-patient unit,” said Paul Mueller, regional vice president of the Rochester, MN-based Mayo Clinic.
“How healthcare is delivered today is rapidly changing and this hospital is going to be a reflection of those ever-changing needs,” said Michael Murray, the system’s regional chair of administration.
It is the largest capital investment in the Mayo Clinic Health System’s history in La Crosse.
“Going to connect to our current cancer center, operating suites, and our emergency department suites,” Murray said.
The current building doesn’t have enough space and would be expensive to remodel, Mayo officials said. The new building will allow staff members to manage their work flow better.
“Where we can then deploy those staff to other areas within our organization,” Mueller said.
Mayo Clinic says the new building will provide jobs in La Crosse; it is looking to hire local contractors for the project.
The building is expected to be built by 2024.
