Mayo Clinic experts say hearing loss can lead to learning difficulties in children

LA CROSSE (WKBT) —  Social media isn’t the only factor affecting your child’s school performance.

Undiagnosed hearing issues make learning more difficult for kids in the classroom.

Mayo Clinic Health System Audiologist Kelly Conroy says kids in the kindergarten and elementary school age ranges are especially vulnerable to these impacts.

“That’s when they’re really learning a lot of their language and speech skills. They’re also learning to get along socially with other children,” she said.

Dr. Conroy says hearing loss has many causes, including infections, genetics and headphone usage.

Parents should consider adding hearing checks to their children’s back-to-school routine.
