Mayo Clinic Health System provides the community with shoveling tips

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- With last night’s heavy snowfall, Mayo Clinic Health experts want to remind you to be careful when shoveling this year.

Mayo Clinic says to pace yourself and take breaks if needed because safety is more important than speed.

They also say snow can hide ice and can make any surface slick, so wear appropriate footwear to avoid slipping.

Mayo Clinic experts say to bend at the knees and not the back and to not pick up too much snow at once.

“Also if you’re not in good physical shape to be shoveling wet heavy snow you can easily injury your back, so really it’s wise just to take it easy,” said Nurse Manager for Mayo Clinic La Crosse Emergency, Andy Wagner.

Mayo Clinic doctors also say know who to call in an emergency and to always carry a cellphone in case needed.
