Mayo Clinic Health System providing mental health resources for staff

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Mayo Clinic Health System is trying to help balance the struggles its physicians and other staff went through during the pandemic.

They are doing this by providing some mental health resources.

Mayo’s regional chief wellness officer, Dr. Anni Shandera-Ochsner, says the healthcare system has a free employee gym in southwest Wisconsin.

She also says Mayo has a program that provides support to staff who have unexpected interactions with patients, called the H.E.L.P (Healing the Emotional Lives of Peers) program.

Doctors are continuing to leave the healthcare industry, but she says the outlook for staffing appears to be getting better.

“I would say we’re not out of the woods in terms of staffing,” Shandera-Ochsner said. “And that speaks to just the state of the nation right now. But, I would say things are definitely looking up and stabilizing there.”

While it is unknown why, she says less physicians left last year and in 2020 compared to 2019.
