Mayo doctors share back-to-school health tips

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The new school year is just around the corner, and health officials believe now is the time to prepare.

Doctors recommend vaccinating your children to get them up to date with immunizations.

Vaccinations help decrease the chances your child will contact a virus such as COVID-19 or monkeypox.

If your child is an athlete, know the risks of playing those sports.

Full contact sports like football require equipment that fits properly,

“It’s really important that kids wear properly fitted helmets and equipment because that generally helps protect them from various injuries, including some head injuries,” said Dr. David Soma, a Mayo Clinic pediatrician.

Although injuries are still possible with protective gear, the equipment helps reduce the severity, he said.
