Mayo Health Clinic System doctors bring awareness to depression

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — October is National Depression and Mental Health screening month and doctors at Mayo Clinic are pushing for awareness.

Over 322 million people in the world are living with depression and doctors say getting help is important.

A psychologist at Mayo Clinic Health System says that simply taking the time to listen can make a difference.

“Telling them what you’ve observed that seems different than what’s typical for that person,” said Mayo Clinic Health System psychologist Erik Wing. “Just putting it out there that you’re here if they want someone or support.”

Symptoms of depression include mood swings, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, appetite changes, feelings of guilt and trouble concentrating.

Doctors say that if someone starts showing any of the symptoms, they should call 988, the number for the National Suicide Hotline.
