Mayo in La Crosse to light up Cancer and Surgery Center to focus on strokes

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse will light its Cancer and Surgery Center on West Avenue in red on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 29, to recognize World Stroke Day.
Taking quick action in response to the following stroke signs is crucial to increase the chance of survival:
• Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arms or legs, especially on one side of the body.
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech.
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or lack of coordination.
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
“Do not drive to the hospital,” said Thomas Halada, a nurse and stroke coordinator at the hospital. “Let someone else drive you.”
“Highly trained emergency medical technicians and paramedics are able to start providing care on the way to the hospital and notify emergency department staff so we are ready to treat a patient more quickly,” Halada said.
