Mayor vetoes city budget plan
The Mayor announced the veto Wednesday
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The future of La Crosse’s city budget is in flux after the La Crosse mayor vetoed the approved plan.
The veto comes after the city council planned to increase the tax levy by an additional $250,000.
In a letter addressed to the city common council Wednesday, Mayor Tim Kabat says council members “missed a golden opportunity to send a message of fiscal restraint to our citizens and taxpayers.”
Kabat also says the council’s reasons for increasing the levy do not match what the city has been able to do in the past.
La Crosse’s Common Council can overturn the veto. Members will need to pass the budget proposal with a 70% vote (12 votes) in favor of the plan.
