Medals awarded in men’s snowboard slopestyle
American snowboarder Red Gerard captured gold in the men’s slopestyle event Sunday at the PyeongChang Olympics.
Gerard was golden in his first Olympics to give Team USA its first medal of the 2018 Games.
The 17-year-old Ohio native, who has called Colorado home since age 7, overcame falls on his first two runs to jump to the top of the standings on his third and final run.
Canada took the next two podium spots, with Max Parrot winning silver and Mark McMorris earning bronze.
Gerard scored 87.16 on his final run to jump ahead of McMorris, who topped the standings with a score of 85.20 following the first two runs. McMorris then fell on his third run and Parrot, who, like Gerard, fell on his first two runs, scored an 86.00 on the last run of the finals to move up into second place.
Gerard was the only American qualifying for Sunday’s 12-man final, with fellow Americans Chris Corning, Kyle Mack and Ryan Stassel falling short in Saturday’s qualifying runs.
