Minnesota Duluth takes NCAA men’s hockey crown
One year after losing the national championship game, the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs defeated Notre Dame to win the 2018 NCAA men’s hockey championship.
The Bulldogs won their second national championship with a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Irish. Minnesota Duluth won its first title in 2011 when the Frozen Four was also played in St. Paul.
Minnesota Duluth scored the first two goals of the game, both in the first period and held Notre Dame scoreless over the final 30 minutes of the contest.
Karson Kuhlman started the scoring 9:30 into the game, and teammate Jared Thomas scored with less than 1:30 left in the period.
Notre Dame’s only goal came at 7:40 of the second period when Andrew Oglevie scored.
The Bulldogs reached the championship game by defeating Ohio State by the same score of 2-1. Notre Dame advanced from the Frozen Four with a 4-3 win over Michigan.
Minnesota Duluth’s championship was a longshot as the Bulldogs received the final at-large bid to make the 2018 tournament.
