Missing therapy horses found dead in Baraboo River

Deputies believe horses drowned in river by accident

Two therapy horses that went missing in March have been found dead in the Baraboo River just west of La Valle, Sauk County sheriff’s officials said.

A kayaker traveling on the Baraboo River contacted the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department to report they had found two horse carcasses in the river Thursday, according to a release.

A deputy was able to locate one horse with the assistance of the kayaker, but the second horse was not able to be located due to the terrain and it was getting darker, deputies said. On Friday, the second horse was found in the water of the river at the same location.

The horses have been identified as the two therapy horses that were reported stolen from September Farm in La Valle, according to the release.

Jimmy was a therapy horse with the Veterans Equine Trail Services program, and Vicki was another rescue horse who was used as a therapy horse by a police officer.

Deputies said the investigation has not generated any evidence of criminal activity, and they believe the horses drowned in the river by accident.
