LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The pandemic changed how many businesses operated, and as people get vaccinated and restrictions loosen, other aspects of life are also making a comeback.

The MTU La Crosse will start collecting fares for passengers again starting on May 3. The transit system made all rides free last year at the onset of the pandemic with the goal of limiting driver and passenger interactions.

Ridership decreased over the past year, and the MTU was able to survive with more than $6 million in Federal CARES Act money. The decrease in ridership and revenue does not affect any other city budget.

Fare money goes right back into the MTU service budget. Officials say they are bringing back fees to help make ends meet.
