Murphy big part of Royall’s recent success
ELROY, Wis. — It’s been a great four-year run for the Royall boys basketball program. In 2010 they made their first ever appearance in the State Tournament and have now won the past two Scenic Bluffs conference championships.
One constant during this stretch has been senior guard Sam Murphy. “The program definitely has turned. A lot of it has to do with Sam,” says head coach Mark Gustafson.
Murphy will graduate as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Coach Gustafson is quick to point out that scoring is not even Murphy’s best attribute. “He is unselfish. Passes the ball, sometimes a little too much for my liking. And an absolute great kid. A role model. I think he’s going to be successful at the next level.”
The next level for Murphy will be at NCAA III Lakeland College. As his time in high school winds down, Murphy has just one goal left.
“Definitely to make it to State.”
Royall earned the number-one seed in their regional and open up the WIAA playoffs hosting Weston on Tuesday.
