Need for addiction treatment centers grows in Wisconsin

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A state report finds there’s a need for more addiction treatment centers.

Wisconsin is set to receive more than $400 million from the settlement of a large, multi-state lawsuit against four pharmaceutical companies that produced and marketed opioids.

The Department of Health Services held listening sessions to find out what the public wants to do with the money.

Experts say the state needs more care options for a widening demographic of people who are dealing with addiction, especially after the effects of the pandemic.

“After an individual has reached a point of being in a severely addicted state and whether they may have medical complications that can be associated with that, those folks may need a higher level of treatment such as both medical care and addictions treatment in a secure setting,” said Dr. Neil J. Brahmbhatt, a Psychiatric Hospitalist with Gundersen Health System.
