News 8 Eye Piece: Old Man River
The influence of the great river
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The Mississippi River pulls in visitors from around the area and around the globe.
In this week’s Eye Piece, photographer Greg White shows us just how big the river really is.
“This is a big river and an important river. People that live here certainly enjoy it, whether you hunt or fish or travel over it every day.”
“Over 300 bird species have been documented, over 50 species of mammals, 119 species of fish.”
“But the river changes every day, and you know that’s if you like change, the river is a good place to be because it does change every day, whether it’s water levels, or the season or just what, it’s a changing scene.”
“It’s a treasure for all Americans, the Mississippi River,” said Jim Nissen, of the Upper Mississippi Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is the most visited Refuge of the 560 in the United States. It brings in approximately three and a half to four million visitors a year.
