Prosecutors says officers were protecting themselves and others

MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) — Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against Barron Country sheriff’s deputies who exchange gunshots with a fleeing suspect earlier this month.
Dunn County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Maki said Monday the officers were justified using force to protect themselves and others.

Barron County deputies were trying to stop 32-year-old Jared Brendel of Dallas, Wisconsin, when he led them on a 10-mile chase into Dunn County on June 3.

Authorities say Brendel eventually opened fire on the deputies, who returned fire.  Brendel’s gun jammed, and he was arrested. No one was struck by a bullet.

The Leader-Telegram reports Brendal faces charges in Dunn County, including first-degree attempted homicide, intentionally pointing a gun at a law officer and trying to flee a traffic officer. He’s due in court July 15.
