Notable deaths of 2019

Jan. 2: Daryl Dragon, one half of popular '70s duo The Captain & Tennille, died at age 76. Tennille was at Dragon's side when he passed away, Dragon's publicist said.

Jan. 13: Alfred Newman, one of the last remaining members of the Navajo Code Talkers, who used their difficult-to-learn language to form an indecipherable code that helped the US win World War II, died at 94. Newman served during WWII with the 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, the Marines said, including at Iwo Jima, Guam and other island campaigns.

Jan. 18: Boo, once named the "World's Cutest Dog," died of a broken heart at age 12. The Pomeranian and his companion Buddy, who died last year, became internet sensations when their American owners started sharing pictures of their adorable antics. His owners said Boo started having heart issues after Buddy died, and they believe he died of a broken heart.

Feb. 7: Former Rep. John Dingell, the longest serving member of Congress on record and a politician whose voice loomed large even after he left Capitol Hill, passed away at 92.

Feb. 10: Jan-Michael Vincent, best known for his role in the 80s CBS series "Airwolf," died after suffering cardiac arrest. His death didn't come to light until March 8.

Feb. 17: George Mendonsa, who maintained for decades that he was the sailor in an iconic 1945 Times Square photo, dubbed "The Kiss," that came to symbolize the end of World War II, died just days before his 96th birthday.

March 25: Scott Walker, the singer, songwriter and producer who rose to fame as part of The Walker Brothers, died at 76. He rose to idol status with The Walker Brothers in the 1960s, with their single "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" reaching number one in the UK. Walker went on to release 14 solo albums.

March 30: "Goldfinger" actress Tania Mallet died at age 77, prompting messages of condolence from James Bond fans. A cousin of British actress Dame Helen Mirren, Mallet played Tilly Masterson alongside Sean Connery's Bond in the 1964 classic. Her death was announced on the official 007 Twitter account.

April 17: "Trainspotting 2" star and former boxer Bradley Welsh was shot dead in Scotland. He was 42. Investigators had yet to release details surrounding the shooting.

May 4: Rachel Held Evans, a New York Times best-selling author, died dies at 37, according to a blog her husband maintained on her website.

May 9: Jim Fowler, who with his friend Marlin Perkins co-hosted "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom," dies, according to the official website for the show.

May 13: Doris Day, the box-office queen and singing star whose wholesome, all-American image belied an often-turbulent personal life, died at 97. She starred in several films in the 60s, including "Pillow Talk," "Lover Come Back" and "That Touch of Mink."

May 14: Tim Conway, best known for his role in "The Carol Burnett Show," died at age 85. The beloved comedian won a Golden Globe and three Emmy awards for this roles on the show.

May 14: Grumpy Cat, arguably the internet's most popular cat and one of its first viral memes, died at 7. Her owners said the beloved feline suffered complications from a UTI and passed away "in the arms of her mommy."

May 24: New Mexico Sen. John D. Pinto, a former World War II Navajo Code Talker, died according to a statement from his family. Pinto was 94 and was the longest-serving senator in New Mexico, where he had been serving since 1977, according to New Mexico's Senate website.

May 26: Bart Starr, the Hall of Fame Green Bay Packers quarterback who won the first two Super Bowl titles in the 1960s, died at the age of 85 in Birmingham, Alabama.

June 9: Mary Duggar, the grandmother of the 19 Duggar children of TLC's "Counting On," died after falling into a pool at her home in Arkansas. She was 78.

July 3: Arte Johnson, a master of sketch comedy who won an Emmy for the hit series "Laugh-In," died of heart failure, according to a family representative. He was 90.

July 6: The Brazilian singer and composer João Gilberto, one of the pioneers of bossa nova.

July 7: Disney Channel actor Cameron Boyce has died at age 20.

July 14: The remains of Charles Levin, an actor who appeared in television series like "Seinfeld" and "LA Law," were found in a remote area of Oregon. He was 70 years old, according to IMDb.

July 16: Golden Globe-winning actor Barry Coe, who had roles in "Bonanza" and films like 1957's "Petyon Place" and "Jaws 2," died last month after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, according to an obituary. He was 84. Coe is seen here with Jayne Mansfield in "Follow the Sun" in 1962.

July 22: Chris Kraft, NASA's first flight director, died two days after the agency celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. He was 95.

Aug. 1: World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame wrestler Harley Race passed away at the age of 76 due to complications from lunch cancer. Race captured the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Championship eight times, according WrestlingNews.co.

Aug. 5: Toni Morrison, author of seminal works of literature on the black experience such as "Beloved," "Song of Solomon" and "Sula" and the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize, died at 88.

Aug. 29: James Leavelle (pictured in tan hat), the Dallas detective who was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when Oswald was fatally shot, has died, his family told CNN. He was 99.

Sept. 5: Kylie Rae Harris, a rising country singer from Texas, died in a car accident in New Mexico, Alex Torrez, the CEO of her management company, Torrez Music Group, tells CNN. She was 30.

Sept. 6: Joan Johnson, co-founder of Johnson Products Company, maker of iconic products such as Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen, dies at age 89.

Sept. 17: Longtime NBC and ABC news correspondent Sander Vanocur dies at 91 on September 17, 2019. He was on the panel for the Kennedy-Nixon debate and moderated the 1984 vice presidential debate.

Sept. 22: Celebrity chef Carl Ruiz, the owner of La Cubana restaurant who made frequent appearances on The Food Network, dies. He was 44.

Sept. 27: Rob Garrison, best known for his work as part of the "Karate Kid" franchise. He portrayed Tommy in the 1984 film and its sequel in 1986.

Oct. 5: Mordicai Gerstein, a beloved children's book author and illustrator, dies at the age of 83.

Oct 17: Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, chair of the House Oversight Committee and a civil rights leader died at the age of 68.

Oct 29: Actor and comedian John Witherspoon, best known for playing Ice Cube's dad in the "Friday" film series, died at 77.

Dec. 22: Joseph Segel, the founder of QVC, died. He was 88 years old. The company, Qurate Retail Group, remembered Segel as the "quintessential entrepreneur." His career saw him delve into diverse industries like publishing, minting, aviation, software and broadcasting, it said.

Dec. 24: Bvlly, a Toronto-based rapper, was shot and killed early Christmas Eve in what police are calling a homicide. Jahquar Stewart, the 24-year-old better known by his rap alias Bvlly, was killed Tuesday morning in a north Oshawa home, according to the Durham Regional Police Service.

Dec 25: Songwriter Allee Willis who wrote "Friends" theme song and co-wrote the Broadway musical "The Color Purple" dies at age 72.
