Novelty hand grenades found in checked luggage at Newark airport
A woman’s novelty bottle openers caused some alarm at a New Jersey airport on Monday.
Transportation Security Administration officials said the bottle openers were made to resemble grenades, and looked real enough to raise a red flag with security screeners at Newark Liberty Interational Airport.
NJ.com reports the woman was allowed to board her flight, but the luggage that held the novelty items didn’t make it on the plane due to the delay at the screening area.
TSA officials said the woman apparently ignored a notice that accompanied the items, warning travelers not to bring them into airports.
Replicas like the hand grenade can look real to screeners using X-ray machines to scan luggage, according to a TSA spokeswoman.
