Nuclear fuel move causes highway to temporarily shut down

GENOA, Wis. — Highway 35 near Genoa was closed twice Thursday, each time for about 45 minutes, so nuclear fuel could be moved.

The spent nuclear fuel was transported to dry cask storage sites at the Genoa power plant.

The highway was closed to keep any potential hazards on the road from impacting the project.

The nuclear facility on the site has been closed since 1987, but the spent fuel has remained on the property.

The spent fuel is monitored around the clock.
