October, November primetime for car-deer crashes
LA CROSSE, WI — Drivers are getting a heads up to be extra cautious on the road for the next two months.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says October and November are the busy months for deer to cross into traffic. That’s because it’s mating season.
Deer tend to be most active at dusk and dawn.
A State Patrol trooper says deer can come from anywhere, and drivers shouldn’t panic if it’s too late to react. “If you’re about to hit a deer, we suggest that you don’t do any kind of swerving, you don’t want to lose control of your vehicle, you don’t want to go into a ditch, you don’t want to hit another vehicle,” said Trooper Ryan Smith.
The trooper says they’re seeing more crashes because of more people traveling, and an increase in the deer population.
