Officer fatally shot while serving warrant in Milwaukee

A Milwaukee police officer who was shot as he served a warrant on the city’s south side died of his injuries Wednesday, according to the Milwaukee Medical Examiner’s Office and the city’s mayor.

The officer was pronounced dead after being rushed to Froedtert Hospital following the shooting in a residential neighborhood late Wednesday morning, according to the medical examiner. Details about the shooting weren’t immediately released.

Numerous officers gathered at the hospital. Milwaukee police planned a procession from the hospital to the medical examiner’s office downtown.

The officer’s death comes six months after another Milwaukee officer, Michael Michalski, was fatally shot while trying to arrest a convicted felon wanted on drug and domestic violence offenses.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said at an afternoon news conference that the officer’s name would not immediately be released, pending notification of relatives. Barrett said the officer’s wife had been notified.

The mayor said he was “filled with sorrow for this senseless loss.”

Attorney General Josh Kaul issued the following statement,

“I join all of Wisconsin in mourning the loss of one of our brave law enforcement officers. Those who put on the uniform every day put their safety at risk to protect others and to save lives. DOJ continues to assist with this investigation and the Law Enforcement Death Response Team is supporting the Milwaukee Police Department.”
