Officials report fights, assaults at Iowa prison

Officials are investigating fights and assaults at an Iowa prison involving several inmates.

Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta says the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison was placed under restrictive movement Monday after fights and assaults involving eight inmates.

Scaletta says the incidents happened during a program designed to prepare inmates for their eventual release. Additional information has not been released.

A member of the department’s emergency response team was injured while attempting to intervene. The member received a puncture wound to the right hand and was treated at a nearby hospital.
