Oktoberfest’s ‘The Slicing of the Golden Brat’ began with a scandal in La Crosse

Brat thrown into an alley

Friday morning’s annual Slicing of the Golden Brat started with a bit of a scandal.

Someone took the 8-foot-long brat off the grill last night and threw it in a nearby alley. Leaders of La Crosse’s American Legion Post 52 recovered the brat and still sliced it up for the morning event, but recommended people not eat it.

Coordinators say the brat is not the focus of the event anyway.

“This is a fundraiser that we do every year, and we raise money for veterans programs such as military honor funerals and veterans rehabilitation, and we also give money to children and youth in the form of scholarships. So that’s what the event is all about, raising money for our programs,” said American Legion Post 52 Post Adjutant David Johnson.

La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat and Congressman Ron Kind also attended the seventh annual Slicing of the Golden Brat.
