On-ramp gates help keep drivers off I-90 during snowstorms

Arms can close ramps at Exit 2, 4 and 5

With several of inches of snow falling, the roads are slippery and officials are urging anyone on the roads to take it slow.

If you’ve driven past a interstate on-ramps recently, you’ve probably noticed the gate arms that have been installed at Exits 2, 4 and 5 in the La Crosse area.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has been adding the gates as part of the recent I-90 construction. They allow law enforcement to keep people off the interstate in the event of large snowstorms or other events that could block traffic.

“If there happens to be a crash downstream of an on-ramp, one officer can go up and lower the gate, (and) close that ramp so additional people don’t drive down and get stuck,” said Andrew Winga of the DOT.

Winga says it’s up to law enforcement when to put the gates down. Another gate is scheduled to be added to the on-ramp at Exit 3 next year.
