Onalaska city officials considering adding roundabout at busy intersection
City officials say roundabout would make intersection more efficient, safer
ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) — The City of Onalaska is considering building a roundabout at a busy intersection.
Right now, there’s a 4-way stop at the intersection of Theater Road and County PH.
That’s the intersection near Mcdonald’s, Coulee Bank, Wells Fargo, and the entrance to a strip mall.
With so many retailers nearby, including Target, it’s a high-traffic area.
City officials say crashes happen often at the intersection.
Onalaska’s Director of Public Works Jarrod Holter says the roundabout would be an improvement.
“A lot of times, there’s enough traffic in the intersection, with multiple lanes, that [drivers] don’t know which person should go, which person should stop,” says Holter. “This will facilitate a uniform traffic movement. Hopefully, it will reduce accidents and be better for the traveling public.”
Holter says the roundabout would be one lane. The center circle would be mountable, meaning large semi trucks would be able to drive over the center circle if they need to pass through.
The roundabout is still in the design phase.
Construction of the roundabout would not begin until at least the spring of 2024.
City officials want to hear from drivers.
There’s a community information meeting on Thursday, October 20 at Onalaska’s City Hall.
The meeting will be in the council chambers, or people can join in remotely from zoom. The meeting ID is ‘986 9364 0995’ and the password is ‘54650’.
Attendees will be able to give their input on the project.
