Onalaska Sunday schoolers collect diapers for needy

ONALASKA — Sunday school classes at Onalaska United Methodist Church are asking folks to show love for the needy in their Love for Luvs disposable diaper collection for the Hunger Task Force in La Crosse.
Despite the title of the effort, the seventh- through ninth-grade organizers will accept any brand of diapers in their quest to collect 7,000 diapers by Feb. 29, said leaders Megan Pence and Ray Mahr, who noted that they have collected more than 6,000 so far.
Babies generally need six to 10 diapers a day, which can cost families $70 to $80 a month, Pence and Mahr said. Most child care centers require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers. Statistically, 1 in 3 families in the United States have trouble affording diapers.
The most-needed sizes are 3 to 6, but Pence and Mahr said they will accept any sizes. Organizers also will accept cash donations, which students and leaders will use to buy diapers.
