One dead in Vernon County hunting accident

71 year old Beloit, IL, man found unresponsive by tree stand

VERNON COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) — One person is dead after a hunting accident in the Township of Stark on Friday.

Vernon County Sheriff John Spears said the accident happened on Campton Road, just south of Jug Creek Road.

Authorities said John Zumwalt, 71-year-old of Beloit, IL, was found lying on the ground about to yards away from the tree stand he was hunting from on Friday.

Spears said Zumwalt was bow hunting for the weekend on family property and never returned home. A family member found Zumwalt.

Authorities said the tree stand Zumwalt was bow hunting in was approximately 25 feet high.

Spears said Zumwalt was pronounced dead at the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
