One of La Crosse’s oldest homes welcomes guests for the holidays
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The La Crosse County Historical Society held a Holiday Showcase for the Historic Hixon House to raise money for maintenance.
They entertained visitors with live music, seasonal refreshments and guides throughout the house December 1, 2, 8 and 9.
Festive decorations were placed through the 160 year old house.
Peggy Derrick, the executive director and curator for the La Crosse County Historical Society, said the house’s original owner, Gideon Hixon, kept warm in the winter with some of the first steam heating technology.
“I think they liked technology. He was always adding new things. He’d probably have a smart home if he was alive today,” said Derrick.
The Hixon House is not currently open for tours, but Derrick said you can call and schedule a special tour any time of the year.
