People are wearing red for American Heart Month
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – You may see a lot of people wearing red this month.
They are raising awareness for American Heart Month.
Heart disease can impact people of all ages.
Half of Americans are at risk for heart disease, according to the CDC.
It’s also the number one killer of women in the U.S.
Compared to men, women are more likely to have symptoms unrelated to chest pains, or no symptoms at all.
According to the CDC, these include:
- Neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort
- Shortness of breath
- Right arm pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sweating
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Unusual fatigue.
But the CDC says education and action can prevent 8% of heart disease cases.
You’re more likely to develop it if you smoke, have high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
Diet also plays a big role.
“A large amount of research supports a whole foods approach, with heart-healthy eating,” said Jamie Pronschinske, a dietitian at Mayo Clinic Health System.
Pronschinske recommends eating lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and moderate amounts of lean meats and low-fat dairy.
It’s also important to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
Health experts recommend 150 minutes of activity per week.
National Wear Red Day is coming up on Friday, the 7th.
