Polar Plunge preparations underway for annual event
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Final preparations are underway for this year’s Polar Plunge in La Crosse.
Crews spent Friday morning cutting a big hole in the ice on the Mississippi River by Pettibone Beach.
The event raises funds for Special Olympics Wisconsin.
Nearly 400 people are signed-up to take the plunge into the fridgid waters tomorrow.
Ice measuring a foot and a half thick is a challenge for prep crews.
“It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had ice like this. This is the 21st year that we’ve done this and we, we’ve had all different variations. We really enjoy it when it’s 60 degrees and there’s no ice, but this year mother nature threw us a curve ball so we’re dealing with what we can,” said Chuck Frandsen site prep committee member for the Polar Plunge.
The opening ceremonies for the Polar Plunge are Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
