Police arrest wrong brother in Des Moines slaying

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say they are working to clear up confusion in a Des Moines homicide investigation after the wrong brother was arrested for the crime last week.

The Des Moines Register reported that police arrested Joey Dupree Coates in connection with the shooting death of Joseph Watley on Nov. 3.

Warrants had been issued for Coate’s twin brother, Joseph Supree Coates and the warrants were cancelled after his brother’s arrest.

The mistake was discovered somewhere along the paper trail and work to correct the error began Monday.

Police say the brothers also have the same street name and are referred to as “Twin.” Others refer to Joey Dupree Coates as Joe D, and his brother as Joe Joe.

The search for Joseph Supree Coates is continuing.
