Police identify new suspect in Madison shelter shooting, considered dangerous

MADISON, Wis. (WISC) — Madison police have identified a new suspect in Monday night’s shooting at a men’s homeless shelter.

In an updated release, the department said they have cause to believe Ronald E Stephens is the one who shot someone at the shelter on First Street just before 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The department had arrested someone else at the scene at the time, but they are no longer believed to be involved.

The department said Stephens is wanted on attempted homicide charges, and may be armed and should be considered dangerous.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a news conference Monday night that officers were outside the nearby men’s shelter for an unrelated medical call when they heard gunshots from inside the building.

Police investigate shooting at men’s shelter

Police entered the temporary shelter at the Fleet Services building and saw two people inside. Barnes said one person was taken into custody, while the other suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The person officers originally took into custody has since been released.

Barnes said an officer fired their weapon while inside, though police believe the person who suffered injuries was shot before officers walked into the shelter.

Since an officer was reportedly involved, the state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has conducted an investigation into the shooting.
