Police: Polk County resident photographed bobcat
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a Polk County resident has photographed a large cat that animal experts say is a bobcat.
Des Moines police say in a news release that the resident took the photo Wednesday night. State agencies have confirmed it’s a mature bobcat weighing about 20 points.
The photo shows the bobcat sitting next to an elevated gnome.
The state Department of Natural Resources says bobcats do not pose a threat to humans. The creatures disperse from their young around this time of year to look for food.
Residents have reported multiple sightings of a possible mountain lion in the area. Police responded by searching near an Altoona elementary school on Wednesday, and checking a Des Moines apartment complex on Monday.
