Police: UW QB McEvoy in bar, had fake ID on night of attack

Report says McEvoy had wallet, iPhone stolen

MADISON, Wis. — A 20-year-old quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers football team who was attacked downtown last month had a fake ID and was inside a bar shortly before he was attacked, according to a Madison police report.

Tanner McEvoy was assaulted near the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and East Dayton Street early on the morning of Sunday, July 21.

McEvoy told police three people assaulted him and stole his wallet, his iPhone 5 and a watch. He admitted to police that inside the wallet, he had a fake South Carolina ID with the name Mike Sawyer on it.

He told police he had been with friends at the Kollege Klub before he was assaulted.

McEvoy was under the age of 21 at the time of the assault. If he had been drinking, McEvoy could face sanctions for violating the UW Athletic Code.

McEvoy initially signed with the University of South Carolina. But he transferred to a junior college after his freshman year after he was arrested for speeding and driving while consuming alcohol in North Carolina.

It’s not clear whether the university will take any action against McEvoy for possessing a fake ID or being underage in a bar.

On Monday, Badgers head Coach Gary Andersen said he wasn’t aware of the fake ID or underage drinking allegations against McEvoy.

“First I’ve heard of that,” Andersen said. “Haven’t heard one word about that in the police report. I’d be speaking out of turn if I even said anything about it.”
