Polish history of Winona to be celebrated during ‘Kashubian Capital Cenntenial Celebration’

Winona is known as the Kashubian Capital of America

WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) – A year long celebration of the heritage of our area is now underway.

The Kashubian Capital Centennial Celebration is a year-long series of events.

Community leaders came together at Winona’s City Hall to help kick the events off.

The celebration is a chance for people in our area to learn about Polish Kashubian immigrants.

Many Kashubian immigrants helped grow Winona more than a century ago.

Because of that history of immigrants from northwest Poland, Winona is known as the ‘Kashubian Capital of America’.

The event comes as Poland is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the ‘Stake War’ and Winona’s leaders say the celebration is overdue.

“We’ve had a polish museum for several decades now. I think as a city wide, community celebration, I think it’s going to mean a lot for those that are Polish and for those that are not Polish,” said Winona Mayor Mark Peterson.

The first event for the celebration will take place February 4th.
