SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) — A Presbyterian congregation in Wisconsin is preparing to ordain the church’s first openly gay minister.

Scott Anderson will be ordained Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Madison. With his ordination, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) becomes the latest mainline Protestant church to move toward accepting homosexual relationships.

Anderson was in the closet more than two decades ago when he acknowledged to his former California congregation that he was gay and therefore must resign as its pastor. A couple had learned he was gay and tried to use the information against him.

But Anderson says that experience was partly positive because it allowed him to claim who he was as a gay man.

The Presbyterian national assembly last year agreed to remove a ban on homosexuals serving as ministers.
