Proposal for paid street parking near Western, UWL campuses moves forward
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — College students in La Crosse will soon pay for parking on city streets
The Board of Public Works passed a motion to move ahead on parking plans near Western Technical College and UW-La Crosse campuses. These plans will add meters to city streets near each campus, which would charge $1 per hour.
The hope is the change will encourage students to park in campus lots and ramps, and leave street parking for those who live in the area. But students argue those lots are already over capacity.
“So just because of that there’s a huge demand for parking around campus as students utilize it a lot. So we wanted to come here and voice our concerns that it felt like student voices weren’t really taken into consideration,” said one student.
The City is moving ahead with two test zones first to get a feel of how well the proposal could work in the future.
