Proposal would change electoral college in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican lawmaker’s proposal to change how Wisconsin awards electoral votes has spurred a swift negative reaction from Democrats who see the move as an attempt to help Republican presidential candidates.
Rep. Dan LeMahieu on Wednesday circulated a proposal for co-sponsors that would change Wisconsin from a winner-take-all system to one in which electoral votes would go to the winner of each congressional district.
Republican leaders weren’t jumping on in support of the idea just yet. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald’s spokesman says the Senate is more focused on bills related to the economy. A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald says he hasn’t even looked at it yet.
Democratic state Rep. Kelda Helen Roys sent an email to Democrats urging them not to sign on to the bill.
