Quilts dating back to 1887 on display in La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. — A new display at the Swarthout Museum brings collaboration from all five historical societies in La Crosse County.

14 quilts dating back to as early as 1887 are on display in the museum that’s attached to the downtown La Crosse public library.

All of them have been donated to a historical society so they can be preserved, but this showcase of quilts isn’t simply to display the intricate patterns, it’s more about the writing on each of them. “They’re all local names of people, local businesses, they’re a record of local history and of people who have lived here,” says museum curator Peggy Derrick.

Derrick says this will probably be the last show in this building since they have a new display area on West Avenue. Quilts will be on display through November.
