Farmers struggle through a difficult year with weather
LA CROSSE, WI — The recent rainfall is helping local crops that are starved for moisture.
Some of the late corn and soybean crops benefited from the rain. Alfalfa and hay crops also needed the rainfall.
Some of the early corn plant that browned in the drought probably didn’t benefit as much. But the biggest benefit of the rain will be putting moisture back into ground. “Certainly the plants are going to be able to pick up some of the moisture as we move through, but hopefully to replenish some of the subsoil moisture that’s starting to be drawn on and also our topsoil moisture to replenish it going into our winter season,” said UW-Extension Ag. Agent Steve Huntzicker.
The rain helped in the Holmen area where the fire department has lifted the burn ban.
