Recommendations to get vaccinated as flu season begins

Mayo Clinic Health System opens flu clinic for first time this year

Flu season is just around the corner and doctors are urging people to get vaccinated.

Every flu season is different so it’s difficult to tell exactly when it will start. No matter when it starts doctors say it’s best to get the shot early, especially for kids.

For the first time this year Mayo Health Clinic in La Crosse opened their flu clinic Wednesday. Depending on your age you can get either an injectable vaccine or a vaccine in the form of a nasal spray.

“For children 2-8 years of age, the actual recommendation is that they do get the nasal version that it seems to be more effective than the injection. Above age 8, the injectable and nasal preparation seems to be affective both ways,” said Mayo Clinic Health System Pediatrician Thomas Dunigan.

The only vaccine available for children six months to two years old and anyone over 50 years old is the injectable shot.
