Recount for Shilling, Kapanke race begins

County Clerk's office conducting hand count of ballots

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The recount began Monday for Wisconsin’s 32nd District State Senate Seat.

A hand-count of the nearly 90,000 ballots cast in the race started Monday morning in La Crosse.

Incumbent Democrat Jennifer Shilling beat out her opponent Dan Kapanke in the November elections. The race was originally decided by a 58 vote difference, falling to 56 votes after canvassing.

County clerks say all the work that needs to be done requires a small army of workers.

“We’re going through and reconciling poll books, we’re reconciling the absentee voters, we’re counting the ballots by hand, making sure all the numbers that were reported on election night is what we hand-count again today,” said La Crosse County Clerk Ginny Dankmeyer.

County clerks estimate the recount to take about one week.
