Rep. Beatty dances to Drake’s ‘In My Feelings’ to promote millennial voting
Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, took to social media Friday to participate in the “#InMyFeelingsChallenge” to encourage young people to vote in the midterm elections this November.
In a video on her Twitter page that has garnered more than 14,000 views, Beatty can be seen stepping out of a white car in front of the Capitol Building in an all-white suit and matching white heels and then dancing with two staffers to rapper Drake’s “In My Feelings.” The song recently sparked a social media challenge in which people do various dance moves to the song’s upbeat tempo and loud bass.
“I don’t know who Keke is but I want her to vote next November because this @WhiteHouse has me and many other Americans “in my feelings”. #KekeMustVote #InMyFeelingsChallenge,” the tweet said.
Drake’s song, which is currently number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, includes a line about a Keke, or Kiki, and asks if she loves him. Beatty’s spokesperson, Carissa Smith, told CNN, “We just need to get Keke to vote.”
In a statement, Beatty said: “As a Member of Congress, it’s imperative we tap into trending topics to help deliver important messages to the next generation, especially when it comes to the importance of voting and using one’s voice.”
“This is but the latest example of how I am bridging the gap between politics/government and millennials,” the statement read.
The congresswoman encouraged people to share the video and to do their own challenge in order to “ensure that #KekeMustVote.” Smith said Beatty is also hoping to get members of the Congressional Black Caucus to participate in another video of the challenge.
“We just need to get more people engaged,” she said. “This is culture meets politics.”
